George RR Martin launches Scholarship
Everyone’s favourite character-killing fantasy author has made an exciting new announcement on his blog.
George has announced that he will be personally funding a scholarship for a student to attend the prestigious Odyssey Writing Workshop based at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Announced in traditional Martin style, on his “Not A Blog” blog, he states that the scholarship covers every aspect of the costs of attending the six week course, including tuition, fees and lodging for the duration of the event.
He is founding the scholarship with the intention that it “will offer an opportunity to a worthy applicant who might not otherwise have been able to afford the Odyssey experience.”
Applicants will have to demonstrate their financial need, but after that the only criteria will be the quality of their writing. Three judges will make the decision based purely on the story samples provided by the applicant.
After stating that they are not after “Lovecraft pastiches”, Martin expresses what he’ll be looking for in the future recipients of his scholarship.
“What we want is the sort of originality that HPL displayed in his day, something that goes beyond the tired tropes of werewolves, vampires and zombies, into places strange and terrifying and never seen before. What we want are nightmares new and resonant and profound, cosmic terrors that will haunt our dreams for years to come.”
